Brack Cornett was a Texas outlaw and co-leader of the infamous Bill Whitley Gang, which carried out a string of bold bank and train robberies across Texas during the late 1880s. Born in Goliad County in 1841, Cornett partnered with Bill Whitley in 1887, and together they stole tens of thousands of dollars from railroads and banks, including what was described by The New York Times as one of the most daring train robberies in Texas history. Despite several successful heists, the gang’s luck ran out in September 1888 when lawmen, including U.S. Marshals and Texas Rangers, ambushed them during a planned train robbery. The confrontation led to the death of Bill Whitley and the capture of another gang member, while Cornett escaped and fled to Arizona, cementing his place in the lore of the American Old West.
